ETOUR is one of Europe’s leading research environments in the field of tourism. ETOUR provides companies, authorities and educational institutions with a unique opportunity to access research-based knowledge and use the visitor as a source of knowledge.
ETOUR researches, educates and communicates factors and processes which are of significance to the tourism industry’s knowledge needs related to destination development. The institute is currently a leading national environment for research-based knowledge about tourism.
ETOUR is part of the Department of Social Science at Mid Sweden University, Campus Östersund. With 25 employees and further recruitment taking place ETOUR is the largest research environment with a focus on tourism in Scandinavia. ETOUR also has three professorships, a fact which is unequalled and represents a mark of quality in itself. ETOUR is also the first research environment in the Nordic region to offer PhD programmes with degrees in Tourism Studies.
The research environment regularly publishes in the most important journals for tourism studies. ETOUR’s vision is to be Europe’s leading environment for researchbased knowledge about tourism in 2020. Research focuses on knowledge-based destination development. Destination development is about making places attractive destinations which work well; it’s about local and regional development in which the tourism industry as a driving force.
